Stretching from the vast silence of the Gobi Desert to the crystal-clear waters of Lake Hövsgöl, this remarkable overland expedition reveals Mongolia in all its extraordinary diversity. Crossing more than two thousand kilometres through the very heart of the country, the journey unfolds as a gradual transition between dramatically different landscapes, from ancient granite massifs, colourful desert escarpments, and fossil-rich badlands to fertile grasslands, volcanic highlands, alpine lakes, and the forests of the southern Siberian taiga. Yet this is far more than a journey through magnificent scenery. Following the footsteps of Bronze Age pastoralists, Buddhist monks, and the rulers of the greatest land empire in history, the expedition explores ancient rock art, the sacred Orkhon Valley, the imperial capital of Karakorum, and monasteries that witnessed both the flourishing and destruction of Mongolian Buddhism. Encounters with contemporary nomadic families reveal that traditions shaped over countless generations continue to define life across the steppe, while rewarding hikes, spectacular viewpoints, and evenings spent beneath Mongolia's immense star-filled sky combine to create one of the most comprehensive and unforgettable journeys through Asia's last great frontier.
