The Grand Northern Loop
For centuries, Mongolia stood at the geographic heart of Inner Asia, where nomadic empires emerged from the open steppe to reshape the political map of Eurasia. This fourteen-day expedition follows that historical landscape from the grasslands surrounding the modern capital through the imperial heartland of the Orkhon Valley, across the volcanic highlands of the Khangai Mountains, into the taiga forests of the country's far north, and back through the great Buddhist monasteries that survived the upheavals of the twentieth century. Along the way, the journey traces the remarkable ecological transition from semi-arid steppe to alpine meadows, extinct volcanoes, glacial lakes, and dense Siberian forests surrounding Lake Khuvsgul, one of the world's oldest and purest freshwater lakes.
