Itinerary

DAY 1. ARRIVAL IN MONGOLIA

  • Dinner

Arrive at the new airport out of Ulaanbaatar. After immigration formalities, meet the local guide and driver, and drive over the newly built highway to a small resort at the slopes of the Bogd Khan Mountain, often referred to as the world’s first protected zone. If time permit, take a first hike in the mountain before setting in for a first night in the cozy yet simple Mongolian version of a lodge, consisting of traditional felt-made dwellings the nomads of Central Asia often refer to as yurt, and the Mongolians call- ger.

DAY 2. FLIGHT TO ULAANGOM – UUREG LAKE

  • Breakfast
  • Lunch
  • Dinner

Early in the morning, drive back to the airport for the morning flight to Ulaangom, the administrative center of Uvs Province. If time permits, visit the local museum, to learn about the flora, fauna, and the diverse ethnic groups inhabiting the area. Then head west out of town and over the Red Mountain Pass to Uureg Lake, a brackish lake at which migratory birds pause on their long journey from Europe and Africa to the Russian Tundra. Near the lake are several examples of bronze age burial mounds. Break camp on the lake’s shores for the first night of bush camping.

DAY 3. UUREG LAKE – KHARKHIRA MOUNTAIN RANGE

  • Breakfast
  • Lunch
  • Dinner

From Uureg Lake drive through a beautiful mountainous road along the western slopes of the Turgen-Kharkhira Mountain Range. Depending on road conditions, the drive might take along Achit Lake, another great place for some bird watching. Late in the evening arrive in the place where the local support team awaits. Join them and break camp by the trailhead.

DAYS 4-7. ASCEND TO KHARKHIRA-TURGEN MOUNTAIN PASS

  • Breakfast
  • Lunch
  • Dinner

For the coming four days, slowly ascend up the mountain range. The route takes through ‘Olon Nuur’ (Mongolian for ‘many lakes’), the Three Colors Lakes, and if the season is right, this is one of the very few places in the world where the Snow Lotus (Saussurea involucrate) can be seen at full bloom during the short Mongolian summer. On the afternoon of day 7, cross the mountain pass at nearly 3000 meters (9850 feet) above sea level, and camp right after it, in a place which is relatively sheltered from blowing winds.

DAYS 8-11. TREK TO THE BLUE LAKE AND OFF THE MOUNTAIN

  • Breakfast
  • Lunch
  • Dinner

For the coming three days, slowly descend the mountain. Walk along the Kharkhira Valley, pass by ancient burial sites, and climb to the beautiful Yellow and Blue Lakes. After last night of bush camping, by the beautiful Blue Lake, make a final descend and meet the vehicles. Say farewell to the local support team, and take the short drive back to Ulaangom, for a night in a simple local hotel.

DAY 12. FLIGHT TO ULAANBAATAR AND ON TO TERELJ NP

  • Breakfast
  • Lunch
  • Dinner

Take the first available flight to Ulaanbaatar. Upon landing, take the two-hours’ drive to Gorkhi-Terelj National Park. The park features beautiful rolling hills, scenic valleys, a winding river, and restful groves of trees. Late in the afternoon, hike to a vantage point to enjoy the sunset over the unique rock formations the park is known for. In the evening, set in the cozy camp for the night.

DAY 13. HIKE AROUND TERELJ NATINAL PARK – ULAANBAATAR

  • Breakfast
  • Lunch
  • Dinner

For the first half of the day, take a hike to the top of the ridge to enjoy a panoramic view over the Gorkhi-Terelj National Park. Revert to the camp for lunch, before pausing by the famous Turtle Rock, a symbol of wisdom and longevity to the Mongolian people. Continue to Ariabal Temple. This is a rather new temple, and a retreat for Buddhist monks and nuns who come here to advance on their journey to enlightenment. Late in the evening drive to Ulaanbaatar.

Day 14. EXPLORING ULAANBAATAR

  • Breakfast
  • Lunch
  • Dinner

Spend the day touring the Mongolian capital city. Begin with Gandan Monastery, Mongolia's largest religious institute. It serves as home for the 26-meters high Janaraysag Statue and one of the only religious institutes in the country to survive the anti-religious purges of the 1930s. If lucky, get to attend the morning Puja- the chanting of Tibetan scripts by the monks. Continue to the National History Museum, which holds a permanent exhibition on the different civilizations that have inhabited the territory of Mongolia from prehistoric times to the present. This exhibition includes a significant display of objects from the era of the Great Mongol Empire. Then take a walk through the central square. Right at the heart of the square see the figure of D. Sukhbaatar, one of the heroes of the communist revolution of the 1920s, boldly raising his arm towards the statue of Chinggis Khan, the nation's forefather whose name was not allowed to be mentioned during the 70-year communist reign. From here, it is a short walk to the drama theater to attend an impressive folk concert featuring some traditional Mongolian art forms. After a farewell dinner, drive back to the hotel for the last night in Mongolia.

DAY 15. DEPARTURE FROM ULAANBAATAR

  • Breakfast

After breakfast, drive to Chinggis Khan Airport for the international flight out of Mongolia.
