Itinerary

Day 1, July 11. Naadam opening ceremony in Ulaanbaatar

  • Lunch
  • Dinner

In the morning we go to the national stadium for the Naadam opening ceremony, a colorful spectacle. Right afterwards the Mongolian traditional wrestling tournament starts in the stadium, and the archery contest begins just outside. During Naadam the national stadium grounds, deserted for the better part of the year, turn into a lively ger city, where food, toys, traditional items and other things are sold. We will have some free time to wander around, joining the Mongolians in their enjoyment of their biggest celebration of the year. In the evening we return to our hotel.

Day 2, July 12. Naadam in Khui Doloon Khudag - Khustain Nuruu SPA

  • Lunch
  • Dinner

Today we have an early start, driving out of the city to Khui Doloon Khudag (Seven Wells) to attend one of the world’s most challenging horse races. Horses run in different age groups, and only male horses compete in races that may stretch over 30 kilometers. Once a proving ground for warriors, the Naadam races are now reserved mainly for children, as jockeys are both girls and boys usually aged between 6 and 13, so the horses carry a lighter burden. After lunch we arrive at Hustaiin Nuruu Strictly Protected Area (SPA). The SPA was established as part of a unique project to reintroduce the world’s last surviving wild horses back to their natural environment. On the brink of extinction during the last century, only a very few Takhi or Przewalski’s horse were left in zoos around Europe. This graceful steppe horse was returned to Mongolia, and today, thanks to this special project, two herds again roam the Mongolian steppes. Overnight in a ger camp.

Day 3, July 13. Khustain Nuruu SPA - Mongol Nomadic

  • Breakfast
  • Lunch
  • Dinner

Today we drive back in time, to a place that recreates the lives of Mongolian nomads at the beginning of the 20th century. This was when Mongolia gained its independence from the Qing Dynasty and established itself as a reemerging nation under a living god-king. We shall attend a demonstration of how the nomads lived their lives during this era, and we shall see a stunning performance of Mongolian horsemanship. Overnight in ger camp.

Day 4, July 14. Mongol Nomadic - Ulaanbaatar

  • Breakfast

After breakfast at the camp, we drive to Ulaanbaatar and transfer to our hotel.
